Practical advice for your trip to Japan
The official currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY, ¥). Although credit card payment is common in large hotels and stores, cash payment remains very common, even essential in small restaurants, markets, temples, and rural areas. It is advisable to always have yen with you. Rechargeable transport cards (Suica, Pasmo) can also be used for payments in many stores.
The official language is Japanese. English is not widely spoken outside major tourist infrastructures (large hotels, airports, major sites). It is much appreciated when visitors learn a few basic words like “Konnichiwa” (hello) and “Arigato” (thank you).
In Japan, the plugs are type A and B (two flat pins, identical to North American plugs). The voltage is 100V and the frequency is 50/60Hz according to the regions. You will need an adapter. Most modern devices (phones, computers) are dual voltage, but a check is advisable.
