What are the must-see places to visit in Cyprus?

Cyprus is full of fascinating sites. Paphos, on the west coast, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its archaeological remains, including the Tombs of the Kings and superb Roman mosaics. Aphrodite’s Rock, mythical birthplace of the goddess, is an iconic site. Limassol is a lively coastal city with its medieval castle and modern marina. Nicosia (Lefkosia), the capital, is the last divided capital in the world, offering a unique blend of history and culture. The Troodos mountains are home to painted Byzantine monasteries (some classified by UNESCO, like the Kykkos monastery), charming mountain villages, and hiking trails. The Akamas peninsula is a preserved nature reserve, ideal for nature lovers. For beaches, Ayia Napa and Protaras are very popular.

What is the climate in Cyprus?

Cyprus enjoys an intense Mediterranean climate, with long, hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters.

  • Winter (December to February): Mild on the coast (around 15-17°C), cooler and rainier inland and in the Troodos mountains, where it can snow. Cyprus is one of the sunniest islands in the Mediterranean.
  • Spring (March to May): Pleasant temperatures, ideal for sightseeing and hiking, with nature in bloom.
  • Summer (June to September): Very hot and sunny, especially on the coasts (temperatures often exceed 30-35°C). Perfect for seaside pleasures.
  • Autumn (October to November): Sunny and warm, with water temperatures still suitable for swimming.

What to eat in Cyprus? Gastronomy in Cyprus

Cypriot cuisine is a delicious blend of Greek, Turkish, and Middle Eastern influences. The mezze is a must: a selection of many small hot and cold dishes (salads, dips like hummus and tzatziki, grilled meats, vegetables, seafood). Halloumi, often served grilled, is a local specialty. Try souvlaki (meat skewers), kleftiko (slow-cooked lamb), and koupepia (stuffed vine leaves). Fresh fruits, olives, and olive oil are ubiquitous. Cyprus also produces wines, the most famous of which is Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine.

Practical tips for your trip to Cyprus

Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean and, according to Greek mythology, it’s the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.

In the Republic of Cyprus (southern part, EU member), the official currency is the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted. It’s advisable to have cash for small shops or markets. In the northern part of Cyprus (internationally unrecognised, except by Turkey), the currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY), although the Euro is often accepted in tourist areas.

The residents of Cyprus are called Cypriots. The island is mainly inhabited by Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

The official languages of the Republic of Cyprus are Greek and Turkish. Greek is spoken by the majority of the population in the south, while Turkish is spoken in the north. English is widely spoken and understood throughout the island, especially in tourist areas, due to the British colonial past.

In Cyprus, the electrical plugs are of type G (the British three-pin rectangular model). The standard voltage is 230V-240V and the frequency is 50Hz. You will need an adapter for European appliances (type C/E/F).
