Cape Verdean cuisine is simple, tasty, and based on seafood and local produce.
The national dish is cachupa, a hearty stew made with corn, beans, vegetables, and meat or fish. Fresh grilled fish (tuna, grouper, wahoo) is ubiquitous.
Also try the pastel com diabo dentro (pastry filled with spicy tuna), modjes (meat stews), and lagosta suada (stewed lobster).
Tropical fruits like mango, papaya, and banana are delicious. The grogue, a local rum, is the traditional alcoholic beverage.

The official currency is the Cape Verdean Escudo (CVE). The Euro is sometimes accepted in highly tourist areas (hotels, some restaurants in Sal or Boa Vista), but it is advisable to have escudos for regular expenses. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and some restaurants on the most touristy islands, but less so in small establishments or on less developed islands. It is recommended to withdraw cash from ATMs (available in main cities) or exchange euros upon arrival.
The people of Cape Verde are called Cape Verdeans.
The official language is Portuguese. However, the everyday language spoken by the majority of the population is Cape Verdean Creole (kriolu), which varies slightly from island to island. French and English are spoken in tourist areas.
In Cape Verde, the electrical outlets are of type C and F. The standard voltage is 220V-230V and the frequency is 50Hz. French devices work without an adapter.
