What are the must-visit places in the Maldives?

In the Maldives, the “places” are often experiences. The capital, Malé, offers a glimpse into local life with its fish market and Friday mosque. TheBaa Atoll, designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, is an exceptional site for observing manta rays and whale sharks (especially from May to November). TheAri Atoll (North and South) is renowned worldwide for its diving sites. A must-experience is the bioluminescence on certain beaches (such as Vaadhoo Island), where plankton creates a “sea of stars” at night. However, the true essential is exploring the lagoon of your hotel island, whether by diving, snorkeling, kayaking, or simply relaxing in an overwater bungalow.

What is the climate in the Maldives?

The Maldives enjoy a hot and humid tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 31°C. There are two main seasons determined by the monsoon:

  • Dry season (December to April): This is the best time to travel, with plenty of sunshine, little rain, and lower humidity.
  • Wet season (May to November): The weather remains warm, but with a higher chance of showers (often intense but brief) and more wind. It’s the best season to see manta rays and whale sharks.

What to eat in the Maldives? Maldivian gastronomy

Maldivian cuisine is centered on three main ingredients: the fish (especially tuna), coconut andstarch (rice, tubers). In the hotels, you will find a varied international cuisine. To taste local flavors, try mas huni, a typical breakfast dish made of smoked tuna, grated coconut, onion, and chili, served with flatbread (roshi). The garudhiya is a traditional fish soup. Various fish curries (mas riha) are also delicious.

Practical tips for your trip to the Maldives

The Maldives is the flattest country in the world. Its natural highest point is just 2.4 metres above sea level, making it extremely vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels.

The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR). However, on resort islands, all transactions are made in US Dollars (USD). It is generally not necessary to have Rufiyaas. Credit cards are accepted everywhere in the resorts. Prices are often shown excluding taxes, so you must add the government tax (GST) and service charges.

The inhabitants of the Maldives are called Maldivians.

The official language is Dhivehi. English is widely spoken and understood in all hotels and tourist areas.

In the Maldives, the most common plug type is type G (British model with 3 rectangular prongs). Type D plugs are also found. It is strongly advised to bring a universal adapter. The standard voltage is 230V and the frequency is 50Hz.
