Practical tips for your trip to Spain
The Canary Islands are not named after the birds… but after dogs! 🐕
The term Canariae Insulae comes from the Latin canis (“dog”), as the first Roman explorers found large wild dogs there. Ironically, the canaries, the emblematic yellow birds, were later named after the islands!
The official currency in Spain is the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted. It’s useful to have some cash for small businesses or markets. ATMs (cajeros automáticos) are numerous.
The inhabitants of the Canary Islands are called the Canarians 🏝️
Singular: a Canarian
Plural: Canarians
This demonym is used to refer to all the inhabitants of the archipelago, but each island also has its own name for its inhabitants:
-
Tenerife → a Tinerfeño / Tinerfeña
-
Lanzarote → a Lanzaroteño / Lanzaroteña
-
Fuerteventura → a Majorero / Majorera
-
Gran Canaria → a Grancanario / Grancanaria
-
La Palma → a Palmero / Palmera
In the Canary Islands, Spanish is spoken, as the archipelago is an integral part of Spain 🇪🇸.
However, Canarians have a soft, singing accent, with typical expressions influenced by North Africa, Latin America (notably Cuba and Venezuela), and former Portuguese settlers. This “Canarian Spanish” is perfectly understandable to any Spanish speaker, but it has a more relaxed tone and sometimes a different vocabulary.
Good to know: in tourist areas like Tenerife, Fuerteventura, or Lanzarote, most locals also speak English and German, and some understand French, especially in hotels and restaurants.
In the Canaries, the electrical plugs are of type C and F. The standard voltage is 230V and the frequency is 50Hz. French devices work without an adapter.
