Japan is full of iconic sites.

Japan’s climate is very varied and marked by four distinct seasons:

Japanese cuisine (washoku) is exceptionally rich and refined. Try authentic sushi and sashimi, but don’t stop there. Enjoy a bowl of ramen (noodle soup), tempura (lightly battered vegetables or seafood), or yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). In Osaka, try okonomiyaki (a kind of savory pancake) and takoyaki (octopus balls). For the ultimate gastronomic experience, treat yourself to a kaiseki meal, an artful succession of small refined dishes.

The official currency is the Japanese yen (JPY, ¥). Although credit card payment is common in large hotels and stores, cash payment is still very common—indeed essential—in small restaurants, markets, temples and in rural areas. It’s advisable to always carry some yen with you. Rechargeable transport cards (Suica, Pasmo) can also be used as a means of payment in many shops.
The official language is Japanese. English is not widely spoken outside major tourist infrastructure (large hotels, airports, major sites). Visitors are highly appreciated when they learn a few basic words such as “Konnichiwa” (hello) and “Arigato” (thank you).
In Japan, plugs are type A and B (two flat pins, identical to North American plugs). The voltage is 100V and the frequency is 50/60Hz depending on the region. You will need an adapter. Most modern devices (phones, computers) are dual voltage, but it’s best to check.
