What to remember about Japan in 4 points

The contrast between tradition and modernity

Japan effortlessly juggles its centuries-old traditions (temples, geishas, zen gardens) and its ultra-modernity (skyscrapers, high-speed trains, pop culture).

The beauty of the four seasons

The country transforms with the seasons, offering unforgettable natural spectacles such as cherry blossoms (sakura) in spring and red maples (momiji) in autumn.

Exceptional gastronomy

Recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, Japanese cuisine is an art that goes far beyond sushi, with an incredible diversity of regional dishes (ramen, tempura, kaiseki…).

A unique culture and deep respect

Travel in Japan is also a lesson in etiquette, marked by politeness, cleanliness, safety, and an ever-present sense of respect.

What are the must-see places to visit in Japan?

Japan is full of iconic sites.

  • In Tokyo, the capital, you should see the Shibuya Crossing, the Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, and go up the Tokyo Skytree for a panoramic view.
  • Kyoto, the former imperial capital, is a must-see, with the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and its thousands of red torii gates, and the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
  • Mount Fuji, a symbol of the country, can be seen from Hakone or the Five Lakes region. Hiroshima is moving with its Peace Memorial Park, and the island of Miyajima just opposite is enchanting with its famous floating torii gate.
  • Finally, Nara charms with its Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple and its free-roaming sika deer.

What is the climate like in Japan?

Japan’s climate is very varied and marked by four distinct seasons:

  • Spring (March to May): Mild and pleasant temperatures; this is the season of the famous cherry blossoms (sakura). It is the peak tourist season.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot and humid, with a rainy season (tsuyu) in June and July.
  • Autumn (September to November): Mild temperatures and magnificent scenery thanks to the colors of maple leaves (koyo). It is also an excellent time to travel.
  • Winter (December to February): Cold and dry across much of the country, with heavy snowfall in the north and in the mountains (ideal for skiing).

What to eat in Japan? Japanese gastronomy

Japanese cuisine (washoku) is exceptionally rich and refined. Try authentic sushi and sashimi, but don’t stop there. Enjoy a bowl of ramen (noodle soup), tempura (lightly battered vegetables or seafood), or yakitori (grilled chicken skewers). In Osaka, try okonomiyaki (a kind of savory pancake) and takoyaki (octopus balls). For the ultimate gastronomic experience, treat yourself to a kaiseki meal, an artful succession of small refined dishes.

Practical tips for your trip to Japan

The official currency is the Japanese yen (JPY, ¥). Although credit card payment is common in large hotels and stores, cash payment is still very common—indeed essential—in small restaurants, markets, temples and in rural areas. It’s advisable to always carry some yen with you. Rechargeable transport cards (Suica, Pasmo) can also be used as a means of payment in many shops.

The official language is Japanese. English is not widely spoken outside major tourist infrastructure (large hotels, airports, major sites). Visitors are highly appreciated when they learn a few basic words such as “Konnichiwa” (hello) and “Arigato” (thank you).

In Japan, plugs are type A and B (two flat pins, identical to North American plugs). The voltage is 100V and the frequency is 50/60Hz depending on the region. You will need an adapter. Most modern devices (phones, computers) are dual voltage, but it’s best to check.
