Feel like discovering Kenya, the cradle of great African safaris, famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration, the Big Five and its idyllic Indian Ocean beaches?

An iconic destination in East Africa, Kenya fascinates with its extraordinarily diverse landscapes, its striking contrasts between the endless savannahs of the Masai Mara, the lakes of the Great Rift Valley, Mount Kenya and the Swahili coasts of Mombasa of incomparable richness.

Accessible all year round, Kenya can be discovered both in the dry season from July to October for safaris and the Great Migration and at the beginning of the year for lush green landscapes and more intimate safaris away from the crowds.

Voyages Flammang helps you organise a tailor-made trip to Kenya, combining jeep safaris in the major parks, encounters with Maasai communities, beach stays on the Indian Ocean coast and discovery of Nairobi, a vibrant capital and the gateway to safaris.

The Great Migration – the greatest natural spectacle in the world

Every year, between July and October, more than 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras cross the Masai Mara in an awe-inspiring cyclical movement. This magnificent natural spectacle, accompanied by the dramatic Mara River crossings, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The Big Five in their natural habitat

Lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros and buffalo: Kenya is one of the few countries where you can observe all five of Africa’s great animals in their natural environment. The Masai Mara, Amboseli and Lake Nakuru offer exceptional wildlife-viewing opportunities all year round.

Incredibly diverse landscapes

From the endless savannahs of the Masai Mara to the pink flamingo lakes of the Great Rift Valley, from the eternal snows of Mount Kenya to the white-sand beaches of Diani, Kenya offers a range of landscapes unique in Africa that few destinations can match.

The Kenyan coast – beaches and Swahili history

Mombasa and the Indian Ocean coast offer a total change of scenery after safari: palm-fringed white-sand beaches, coral reefs for diving, Mombasa’s historic old town and the seaside resort of Diani are among the most beautiful beaches in East Africa.

Maasai culture – authentic encounters

The Maasai people are one of Kenya’s living symbols. Visiting a manyatta (village), attending traditional dances and talking with warriors in red togas offer human encounters of incomparable richness and a unique insight into age-old traditions.

A destination accessible from Luxembourg

Kenya is accessible from Luxembourg with a stopover, mainly via Amsterdam, Paris or Brussels. In less than 12 hours of travel, you reach Nairobi for a complete change of scenery guaranteed in the heart of East Africa.

When to go to Kenya?

Kenya can be visited year-round, but the best time depends on the type of experience you’re looking for: the Great Migration, dry-season safaris or beaches along the coast.

Peak safari season – The ideal period (July to October)
From July to October, the dry season offers the best conditions for safaris: sparse vegetation, animals concentrated around water points, and the peak of the Great Migration with spectacular crossings of the Mara River between July and September.

Rainy season – Best avoided for safaris (April to June)
From April to June, the long rains make some tracks impassable and reduce visibility in the parks. However, this is the greenest and least crowded period, ideal for tight budgets and photographers who love lush landscapes.

Low season – Intimate safaris (January to March)
From January to March, the short dry season offers an excellent alternative with fewer tourists, more attractive rates and great wildlife-viewing opportunities. It’s also the ideal time to combine a safari with a beach stay along the coast.

Which trip to Kenya is right for you?

Kenya lends itself to many travel styles: a safari in a major national park, a journey across several reserves, a beach extension along the coast, immersion in Maasai culture, or a combined trip with Tanzania. Depending on your preferences, your travel season, and your pace, several experiences offer a unique way to discover this exceptional country.

Practical tips for your trip to Kenya

Kenya is the only country in the world where a national park directly borders a capital city. Nairobi National Park, on the edge of the city, lets you spot lions, giraffes and rhinos with Nairobi’s skyline in the background — a unique image in Africa. Kenya is also home to the world’s largest reserve of wild black rhinos.

The currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). Bank cards are accepted in major hotels and lodges. It is recommended to have US dollars (USD) in cash for park entry fees and tips. Mobile payment via M-Pesa is very common locally.

The official languages are Swahili and English. English is widely understood in tourist areas, lodges and parks. A few words of Swahili (jambo = hello, asante = thank you) are always appreciated by locals.

You will find type G sockets (British, with three rectangular pins). A universal adapter is essential for European travellers. The voltage is 240V. Lodges in remote areas often run on a generator or solar energy.

Kenya is an accessible destination, but a few precautions are necessary: avoid certain neighbourhoods in Nairobi at night, follow guides’ instructions in the parks, and check the security situation before departure. Tourist areas (parks, lodges, the coast) are generally safe for travellers.

Kenya can be reached from Luxembourg with one stopover, via Amsterdam (KLM), Paris (Air France) or Brussels (Brussels Airlines).

  • total travel time: around 10 to 12 hours
  • arrival airport: Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)

Getting around is mainly by 4×4 vehicle with a pop-up roof for safaris. Transfers between parks and hotels are arranged by local operators. Domestic flights (Nairobi–Masai Mara, Nairobi–Mombasa) save time on multi-destination itineraries.

A visa is required for Luxembourg nationals (eVisa available online). Recommended vaccinations:

  • hepatitis A and B, typhoid, meningitis
  • yellow fever mandatory if transiting through certain countries
  • antimalarial prophylaxis strongly recommended

FAQ: the most useful questions for planning your trip to Kenya

Start by choosing your season according to the experience you want: July to October for the Great Migration, January to March for more intimate safaris. Then plan an itinerary combining several parks to optimize wildlife viewing. Arrange vaccinations and the electronic visa several weeks before departure.

The ideal length depends on your program:

  • 7 to 8 days: Masai Mara + Amboseli safari, the country’s essentials
  • 10 to 12 days: complete itinerary with Nakuru, Nairobi and a coastal extension
  • 14 days and more: full immersion with Laikipia, Samburu and a Tanzania combo

The Great Migration in Kenya takes place mainly in the Masai Mara from July to October. The dramatic crossings of the Mara River by wildebeest happen mostly in August and September, which are the most spectacular months. Outside this period, animals are present but the migration is less concentrated.

Kenya is a quality destination with a range of price points. Generally, plan on:

  • flight from Luxembourg: €700 to €1,500 depending on the season
  • 3* lodge safari: from €200 to €350 per day full board
  • luxury camp safari: €500 to €1,500 per night all inclusive

Yes, Luxembourg nationals need a visa to enter Kenya. The electronic visa (eVisa) is available online on the official Kenyan government portal (etaKenya.go.ke). It is recommended to obtain it several weeks before departure. The cost is about USD 50.

Recommended vaccinations are hepatitis A, typhoid and meningitis. Yellow fever is mandatory if you are coming from a risk country. Antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly advised for all rural areas and parks. Consult a travel medicine specialist at least 6 weeks beforehand.

Yes, combining Kenya and Tanzania is a very popular option. The Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya form a single ecosystem crossed by the Great Migration. It is possible to cross the border by car or by charter flight for an itinerary that combines both countries in 12 to 14 days.

Yes, Kenya is an excellent family destination. Children can go on safaris from age 6 in most lodges. The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi, the Giraffe Centre and the beaches of Diani Beach are especially popular with families. Family lodges offer educational activities adapted for children.

Kenyan cuisine is simple and flavorful. Not to be missed: Ugali (maize porridge, staple dish), Nyama Choma (charcoal-grilled meat), Sukuma Wiki (sautéed collard greens), Chapati (Indian-influenced flatbread) and delicious local tropical fruits like mango and papaya.

The ideal safari in Kenya combines several elements: an expert driver-guide to maximise sightings, game drives at dawn and late afternoon (when animals are most active), a stay of at least 3 nights in each park, and if possible a hot-air balloon flight at sunrise over the Masai Mara savannah.

Nairobi and the major cities have a good 4G connection. In safari lodges and camps, Wi-Fi is often available but speed is limited. In remote areas like northern Kenya or some parts of the Masai Mara, the connection can be very weak. It’s also a chance to truly disconnect.
