Feel like discovering Morocco, a crossroads between Europe and Africa, famous for its millennia-old medinas, its rammed-earth kasbahs, its golden sand dunes and its legendary hospitality?

A one-of-a-kind destination, Morocco fascinates with its striking contrasts: from the ochre ramparts of Marrakech to the blue alleyways of Chefchaouen, from the Dadès Gorges to the endless dunes of Erg Chebbi, from the Atlantic beaches of Essaouira to the snows of the High Atlas.

Accessible year-round from Luxembourg, Morocco lends itself equally well to cultural city trips in the imperial cities as to discovery tours or seaside stays on the Atlantic coast.

The imperial cities – an exceptional living heritage

Marrakech, Fez, Meknes and Rabat form the quartet of Morocco’s imperial cities. Each has a UNESCO-listed medina, palaces, souks and monuments of incomparable architectural richness. Marrakech’s Jemaa el-Fna Square, listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is an unrivalled live spectacle.

The medina of Fez – at the heart of the Moroccan soul

Fes el-Bali, the largest medieval medina in the Arab world, is a maze of alleyways where time seems to stand still. Leather tanneries, the Bou Inania Madrasa, fountains decorated with zellige: every corner of Fez is a masterpiece. Fez is the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco, and one of the most fascinating cities in the world.

The Sahara Desert – a night under the stars

The golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga rise up to 150 metres. A camel ride at sunset, a night in a desert camp under a starry sky and a sunrise over the dunes: the Moroccan Sahara is an unforgettable experience that every traveller should have at least once.

Chefchaouen – the Blue Pearl of the Rif

Nestled in the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is one of the most photogenic cities in the world. Its alleyways and facades painted in shades of blue create a unique, gentle and soothing atmosphere. The ideal complement to a tour through the imperial cities, Chefchaouen is a must-stop in northern Morocco.

Moroccan gastronomy – tagines, couscous and mint tea

Moroccan cuisine is one of the most refined in the world. Lamb tagine with prunes, Friday couscous, chicken-and-almond pastilla, spicy harira and ever-present sweet mint tea: every meal is an invitation to conviviality and a celebration of souk spices.

Morocco in 3 hours from Luxembourg

Morocco is one of the destinations most accessible from Luxembourg. Direct flights connect Luxembourg–Marrakech, and quick connections via Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam make it possible to reach Casablanca, Fez or Agadir in under 5 hours total. Maximum change of scenery for minimal travel time.

When to go to Morocco?

Morocco can be visited all year round, but the best time depends on your destination and the type of trip you want: city break, mountain trekking, or a beach holiday.

Spring and autumn – The ideal season (March–May and Sept–Nov)
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the best conditions for visiting the imperial cities and hiking in the High Atlas. Temperatures are pleasant, landscapes are lush, and crowds are smaller than in peak season.

Summer – Depends on the region (June to August)
Summer can be very hot in inland cities (Marrakech, Fes reach 37–40°C), but remains pleasant on the Atlantic coast (Agadir, Essaouira). It’s also the ideal time for beach stays and nights in a desert bivouac in the Sahara.

Winter – Mild weather and authenticity (December to February)
Winter in Morocco is mild on the coast (Agadir, Marrakech) and cool in the mountains. It’s an excellent time for city breaks in Marrakech and cultural tours, with fewer tourists and more attractive prices. Snow on the Atlas is also a lovely surprise.

Where to go in Morocco? Must-see destinations based on what you’re looking for

Morocco’s tourism capital, Marrakech captivates with its contrasts: Jemaa el-Fna square with its storytellers and musicians, maze-like souks filled with a thousand spices, palaces decorated with zellige tiles, and peaceful riads hidden behind understated carved wooden doors. A city break in Marrakech is a total sensory immersion.

Ideal for:

  • cultural and foodie city breaks
  • shopping in the souks and medina
  • a riad stay with a hammam spa

Not to be missed:

  • Jemaa el-Fna Square – UNESCO World Heritage
  • Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum
  • Bahia Palace and El Badi Palace

Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest still-inhabited medieval medina in the world. Its 9,000 alleyways are home to mosques, mosaic-adorned madrasas, centuries-old leather tanneries, and artisan souks. • photography and authentic craftsmanship
  • traditional Moroccan cuisine

Must-sees:

  • Chouara Tanneries – panoramic view
  • Bou Inania Madrasa – architectural masterpiece

Nestled in the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is one of the most photogenic cities in the world. Its alleyways, staircases and façades painted in shades of blue and white create a unique, captivating atmosphere. Far from the hustle and bustle of the great imperial cities, Chefchaouen invites you to stroll, enjoy a coffee in Outa el-Hammam Square, and hike in the Rif.

  • a stop between Fez and the Mediterranean coast

To see:

  • Outa el-Hammam Square – the heart of the city

  • Ras el-Maa waterfalls

The dunes of the Erg Chebbi near Merzouga rise to over 150 meters and are among Morocco’s most spectacular landscapes. A 4×4 excursion along the southern tracks, a camel ride at sunset, and a night in a desert camp under a sky full of African stars make for the most memorable experience of a trip to Morocco.

Perfect for:

  • 4×4 excursions on the southern tracks
  • nights in a desert camp in the dunes
  • camel ride

To combine with:

  • Todra and Dadès Gorges
  • Draa Valley and its palm groves
  • Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou – UNESCO

A UNESCO-listed port city, Essaouira charms visitors with its white-and-blue medina swept by Atlantic winds, its ramparts overlooking the ocean, its lively fishing port and its unique artistic vibe. Formerly Mogador, Essaouira is an ideal destination to recharge after a tour of the imperial cities.

Best for:

  • beach break and windsurfing
  • medina and Portuguese architecture
  • artistic atmosphere and seafood restaurants

To explore:

  • Sqala ramparts and views over the Atlantic

Which trip to Morocco is made for you?

Morocco lends itself to many travel styles: a city break in Marrakech, a tour through the imperial cities, an adventure in the Sahara Desert, a beach stay in Agadir, or trekking in the High Atlas. Depending on your desires, the season, and your pace, several experiences await you in this multifaceted country.

Practical tips for your trip to Morocco

Marrakech’s Djemaa el-Fna square is listed by UNESCO not for its buildings, but as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” — a distinction unique in the world. Every evening, storytellers, fire-eaters, Gnawa musicians and jugglers put on the biggest free live show on the planet.

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Bank cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants, but cash remains essential in the souks, for taxis and small shops. ATMs are widely available in all cities.

The official languages are Arabic and Amazigh (Berber). French is very widely spoken in administration, tourism and commerce. French-speaking travellers will have no difficulty making themselves understood in cities, hotels, restaurants and travel agencies.

Morocco uses type C and E plugs — the same as in France, Belgium and Luxembourg. No adapter is needed for European travellers. The voltage is 220V, identical to that used in Europe.

Morocco is an overall safe destination and very well accustomed to international tourism. Usual precautions apply: stay vigilant in very crowded medinas, don’t leave valuables on display, and check the latest recommendations from the embassy before departure. Tourist areas are well secured.

Morocco is very well served from Luxembourg:

  • Direct flights Luxembourg–Marrakech available depending on the season
  • Fast connections via Paris (Air France), Brussels (Brussels Airlines) or Amsterdam (KLM)
  • Total travel time: 3 to 5 hours depending on the route and destination (Marrakech, Fès, Casablanca, Agadir)

Travel is mainly by taxi (small taxis within cities, shared grand taxis between cities) and by train (ONCF) between the major cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Fès, Marrakech). For tours in the South and the desert, a 4×4 vehicle with a driver-guide is recommended. Car rental is also very convenient.

No visa is required for Luxembourg nationals (and Europeans in general) — a stay of up to 90 days is possible with a valid ID card or passport. Vaccinations are not mandatory but recommended:

  • Hepatitis A and keeping basic vaccinations up to date
  • Hygiene precautions: bottled water, beware of raw vegetables in small restaurants

FAQ: the most useful questions for planning your trip to Morocco

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit Morocco. Temperatures are pleasant in the imperial cities, the landscapes are green, and crowds are moderate. Summer is ideal for the Atlantic coast but very hot inland (Marrakech, Fez, 37–40°C).

The recommended length depending on your itinerary:

  • 4 to 5 days: city break in Marrakech or Fez, the essentials of one city
  • 7 to 8 days: imperial cities tour (Marrakech, Fez, Chefchaouen)
  • 10 to 14 days: complete tour including the Sahara Desert and the Atlantic coast

No, Luxembourg nationals do not need a visa for Morocco for stays of up to 90 days. All you need is a valid passport or identity card. This easy access makes Morocco one of the simplest destinations to plan from Luxembourg.

The four imperial cities are unmissable: Marrakech for its unique atmosphere, Fez for its UNESCO-listed medieval medina, Meknes for its ramparts and proximity to Volubilis, Rabat for its blend of modernity and heritage. Chefchaouen and Essaouira are ideal additions to a Moroccan itinerary.

The main gateway to the desert is Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. It can be reached from Fez (6 hours) or Marrakech (8 hours) by car or 4×4. It is recommended to spend at least one night camping in the dunes. Most tour operators offer tours combining imperial cities + desert in 7 to 10 days.

Morocco is an affordable destination with great value for money:

  • flight from Luxembourg: €100 to €400 depending on the season and airport
  • charming riad: €80 to €200 per night for a double room
  • quality restaurant: €15 to €40 per person
  • 7-day all-inclusive organized tour: from €700/person

The rail network (ONCF) is excellent between the major cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Marrakech). For tours in the South and desert excursions, a 4×4 vehicle with a driver-guide is optimal. Taxis (small taxis in cities, shared grand taxis between cities) are affordable. Car rental works well for independent travelers.

Yes, Morocco is an excellent family destination. Children are very warmly welcomed in a country where hospitality is a strong cultural value. Beach resorts in Agadir, camel rides in the Sahara, riads with pools in Marrakech, and exploring the souks are experiences that leave a lasting impression on children.

Moroccan cuisine is one of the most refined in the world. Must-tries: lamb tagine with prunes or preserved lemon, seven-vegetable couscous, pastilla (a sweet-and-savoury pastry), harira (spiced soup), mechoui (roast lamb), and honey pastries. Best enjoyed with a sweet mint tea.

Yes, a Marrakech–Fez–Chefchaouen itinerary in 7 days is absolutely doable and very popular. The ideal pace: 2 nights in Marrakech, 2 nights in Fez, 1 night in Chefchaouen, then back. You can also add Meknes and Volubilis as day trips from Fez. For a complete tour including the desert, allow 10 to 12 days.

Morocco is a moderate Muslim country and welcoming to tourists. A few tips: cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and religious sites, opt for more covered clothing in traditional medinas and rural areas. Beach resorts (Agadir, Essaouira) are more relaxed, and swimwear is perfectly acceptable there.
