When to go to Brazil?
Brazil is an immense country with multiple climates. The ideal season varies depending on the regions visited and the activities you want to do.
June – September (dry season) — The best time
Ideal for Rio, São Paulo, Salvador and the Northeast. Mild temperatures in Rio (22–26°C), clear skies, calm sea. Best time for the Pantanal (low water, jaguars visible). Avoid the Amazon in July–August (extreme low water, some areas inaccessible).
February – March — Carnival
The most festive time of the year. The Rio Carnival (5 days before Ash Wednesday) is the most spectacular event in the world. Book your hotels and Sambadrome tickets 6 to 12 months in advance. Rainy but hot period (30°C).
November – December
Start of the rainy season in the southeast. But excellent for the Amazon (high water, access to areas inaccessible the rest of the year, pink dolphins easier to spot). The Northeast is still beautiful and less crowded.

Practical tips for your trip to Brazil
Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world (8.5 million km²) and the largest in South America. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country on the American continent. The Amazon rainforest, which covers 60% of its territory, produces 20% of the planet’s oxygen. Brazil has 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Brasília, Olinda, Iguaçu National Park and the Jesuit Missions.
Good news: since 2024, Luxembourg and European citizens no longer need a visa for Brazil for stays of up to 90 days (reciprocity agreement with the EU reinstated). All you need is a valid passport. Registration for the Brazilian ESTA (online form) may be required — check with the Brazilian embassy before departure.
The currency is the Brazilian Real (BRL). Visa and Mastercard are accepted in major cities and hotels. In rural areas and markets, cash is essential. ATMs are plentiful in cities. Use a Revolut or Wise card to avoid high exchange fees. Avoid exchanging money in the street.
Brazil is huge — domestic flights are essential for a tour. LATAM and Gol offer frequent connections between Rio, São Paulo, Manaus, Salvador, Iguaçu and Brasília at reasonable fares. Long-distance buses (ônibus) are comfortable and affordable. In Rio, use the metro, Uber or Lyft — avoid unofficial taxis.
The official language is Brazilian Portuguese, which differs from European Portuguese. Spanish is of little use (and often frowned upon). English is spoken in hotels and tourist areas. Download Google Translate with the offline Portuguese pack. A local SIM (Claro, Vivo) with data is available at the airport to stay connected.
Brazil has used the Type N standard (220V/60Hz) since 2011. But many older hotels still have Type A/B (American) or Type C (European) outlets. A universal adapter is strongly recommended. Note: major cities run on 220V, but some regions (especially São Paulo) may be 110V — check before plugging in a device.
Brazil requires a few precautions: avoid showing your phone, camera or jewelry in the street. Use taxis or Uber rather than walking at night in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Some favelas are dangerous — follow local advice. In Rio, tourist areas (Ipanema, Leblon, Santa Teresa during the day) are generally safe. Your agency will guide you on which areas to prioritize.
Brazil is a mid-range destination. Meal in a casual local restaurant: €5–12. Caipirinha in a bar: €3–6. Accommodation: from €25 (hostel) to €300+ (resort). Costs vary widely by region: Rio and São Paulo are more expensive; cities in the Northeast and the Amazon are more affordable. Domestic flights are a significant part of the budget for a full itinerary.
Recommended vaccines: yellow fever (required for certain areas such as the Amazon and the Pantanal), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, tetanus-polio. Malaria is present in the Amazon — consult your doctor about preventive medication. Use mosquito repellent (dengue is present in urban areas). Tap water is not drinkable — drink bottled water. Travel insurance with repatriation is mandatory.

The dry season (June to September) is the best time to visit Rio and southeastern Brazil. June–August is the austral winter: pleasant temperatures (22–26°C), little rain, calm seas. For Carnival, book in February or March (before Lent). The Amazon is best visited from May to October (dry season, navigable routes).
