Fancy travelling to a country where ancient Buddhist temples, fortresses perched on rocks, a legendary train winding through the heart of tea plantations, safaris with leopards and elephants, and pristine Pacific beaches follow one another in a single destination?

Sri Lanka, nicknamed the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”, is one of South Asia’s most surprising destinations. A small island of 65,000 km² off the coast of India, it packs an exceptional diversity of landscapes and experiences: the ruins of Sigiriya, a UNESCO-listed rock fortress whose monolithic rock rises 180 metres above the jungle; the temples of Dambulla carved into the rock and covered with Buddhist frescoes; the tea-hills train from Kandy to Ella, considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world; the safaris in Yala National Park, renowned for the highest concentration of leopards on the planet; and the beaches of the South Coast — Mirissa for spotting blue whales, Unawatuna for diving, Tangalle for absolute tranquillity.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on the region: from December to March, the West Coast and the Centre (Sigiriya, Kandy, Colombo) enjoy ideal conditions—sunny and dry. It’s also the perfect season for the South’s beaches and whale watching in Mirissa. From June to September, the East Coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) takes over with its unspoilt beaches and surf scene.

Voyages Flammang can help you design a tailor-made Sri Lanka itinerary, from the classic Cultural Triangle to safari and beach extensions, fully personalised from Luxembourg.

Sigiriya – the Lion Rock fortress towering over the jungle (UNESCO)

The Sigiriya Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is undoubtedly Sri Lanka’s most spectacular site. This 5th-century fortress is built atop a 180-metre-high granite monolith, rising like a giant from the jungle. The climb reveals rock frescoes of celestial women dating back 1,500 years, the gigantic paws and tail of a lion carved into the rock, and at the summit, the ruins of the royal palace with 360° views over the tropical jungle of Sri Lanka’s North Central region.

The tea-hills train – Kandy to Ella, the most beautiful route in the world

The train journey from Kandy to Ella is regularly ranked among the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. For 6 hours, the blue Sri Lanka Railways train winds through hills blanketed in vivid green tea plantations, waterfalls, tunnels and dizzying viaducts. The Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, a 1921 colonial brick bridge spanning a 24-metre-deep gorge in the middle of the tea forest, is Sri Lanka’s iconic image. Doors open, wind in your hair, hypnotically beautiful scenery — an unforgettable experience.

Safari in Yala & Udawalawe – leopards, elephants and buffalo

The Yala National Park, in southern Sri Lanka, has the highest density of Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya) on the planet. This endemic subspecies, slightly smaller and lighter-coated than the African leopard, can be spotted with remarkable regularity in the park’s scrub. Yala is also home to Asian elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys and exceptional birdlife. Udawalawe, another Sri Lankan national park, is renowned for its elephant gatherings and its rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves.

Buddhist temples – Kandy, Dambulla and the ancient cities

The Temple of the Tooth of the Buddha in Kandy houses the most sacred relic in Theravada Buddhism: a 2,500-year-old tooth of the Buddha, venerated continuously for centuries. The Golden Temple of Dambulla, carved into a granite cliff and decorated with more than 150 Buddha statues and multicoloured frescoes of rare beauty, is the largest cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, successive capitals of Buddhist kingdoms, complete this UNESCO-listed Cultural Triangle.

South Coast – Mirissa, Unawatuna, Tangalle & blue whales

Sri Lanka’s South Coast is lined with golden-sand beaches framed by palm trees, with a simple, authentic tropical beauty. Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to spot blue whales — the largest animals that have ever existed on Earth — and sperm whales, from December to April. Unawatuna, with its crescent-shaped lagoon protected by a coral reef, is ideal for diving and snorkelling. Tangalle, quieter, attracts nature lovers and fans of wild beaches. Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa, with its coconut palms overlooking the sea, is one of the country’s most photographed panoramas.

From Luxembourg – how to get to Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka can be reached from Luxembourg via a stopover in Dubai (Emirates / flydubai), Doha (Qatar Airways), Abu Dhabi (Etihad) or Frankfurt/Paris (Lufthansa, Air France) to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo. Total duration: 12 to 14 hours. No visa required in advance — however, an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) online is mandatory before entry (USD 30 online at eta.gov.lk). It allows a 30-day stay, extendable on site. The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), but USD and bank cards are widely accepted.

When to go to Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate influenced by two distinct monsoons, which make certain regions more favorable than others depending on the season. The good news: it’s always possible to travel to Sri Lanka whatever the time of year — you just need to adapt the itinerary.

December to March – High season for the West Coast, the Central region and the South
It’s the best time to visit Sri Lanka if you want to combine culture, safari and beaches. The West Coast (Colombo), the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy, Dambulla), the tea hills of Ella and the South Coast (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Tangalle) enjoy dry, sunny weather. It’s also the season for blue whales in Mirissa (December–April) and peak tourist season. Book early.

April – Transition
April marks the transition before the Southwest monsoon. The weather often remains pleasant at the beginning of the month, but showers can intensify toward the end of the month on the West Coast. A good time for the tea hills, still green and cool.

May to September – Southwest monsoon: focus on the East Coast
The West Coast and the Central region experience heavy rainfall. This is the ideal time for the East Coast — Trincomalee (beautiful beaches, snorkeling with dolphins), Arugam Bay (a world-class surf paradise) and Batticaloa. For surf lovers, Arugam Bay from August to October is a must.

October–November – Shoulder season and inter-monsoon
A transition period with possible rain everywhere. October remains workable for the tea hills. November sees the gradual return of drier weather on the West Coast.

Where to go in Sri Lanka? Must-see regions and sites

The Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka’s North Central region brings together the country’s greatest Buddhist archaeological sites. Sigiriya (5th century), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the fortress-palace built atop a 180-meter rock — the frescoes of celestial maidens and the ruins of the royal palace at the summit are among the most fascinating in Asia. Dambulla, only 18 km away, is home to Sri Lanka’s largest cave temple complex (5 caves, 150 Buddha statues, multicolored frescoes).

Not to be missed:

  • climb Sigiriya Rock at sunrise
  • visit the 5 caves of Dambulla’s Golden Temple
  • Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa tour — UNESCO ancient cities

Must-see:

  • the reflecting pool at the foot of Sigiriya Rock at dawn
  • the rock frescoes of the Gallery of Celestial Maidens
  • sunset from nearby Pidurangala Rock

Kandy, the former royal capital of Sri Lanka, is the country’s cultural and spiritual heart. Its Temple of the Tooth of the Buddha (Sri Dalada Maligawa), a UNESCO-listed site, houses the most sacred relic in Theravada Buddhism, the tooth of the Buddha, revered by pilgrims from around the world. The city sits on the edge of an artificial lake created in the 19th century, surrounded by lush hills. In August, the Kandy Perahera — Asia’s largest procession of decorated elephants — is a spectacle of extraordinary richness and color.

Perfect for:

  • visiting the Temple of the Tooth at dusk (ceremonies)
  • a walk around Kandy Lake at sunset
  • setting off on the legendary Kandy–Ella train (9 Arches Bridge)

Not to be missed:

  • traditional Kandyan dance (evening show)
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya (80 ha)
  • visit to a village in the region with a local meal

Ella, a small village nestled at 1,000 metres above sea level in the tea hills of central Sri Lanka, has become one of the island’s most popular destinations. Its popularity is largely due to the Nine Arches Bridge — the 1921 colonial brick viaduct spanning a 24-metre gorge, over which the historic hill-country train passes — and the spectacular panoramic views over valleys covered in tea plantations of a remarkably intense green. The Kandy–Ella train journey (6h) is an unforgettable sensory experience.

Ideal for:

  • the Kandy–Ella train ride (the most beautiful in the world)
  • Little Adam’s Peak hike (panoramic view over the tea hills)
  • visit to a tea plantation with a tasting

Must-do experiences:

  • waiting for the train at Nine Arches Bridge during golden hour
  • Ella Rock hike at sunrise
  • sunset over the tea hills from the village

The Yala National Park, in south-eastern Sri Lanka, is the paradise of the Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya). Its leopard density is the highest in the world, making it one of the best places on Earth to observe this elusive feline in the wild. Yala is also home to Asian elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo and more than 200 bird species. Udawalawe, further west, is famous for its very large herds of elephants seen almost daily, and its Elephant Transit Home — a rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves.

For travellers looking for:

  • spotting the Sri Lankan leopard in its natural habitat
  • sunrise jeep safaris (best chances)
  • visiting the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe

Not to be missed:

  • early-morning safari (6am–9am) — best time for leopards
  • herds of elephants by the river in Udawalawe
  • migratory birds — flamingos and pelicans on the lakes

Mirissa, on Sri Lanka’s south coast, is the starting point for boat trips to observe blue whales — the largest animals ever to have existed on Earth (up to 30 metres and 180 tonnes) — and sperm whales, from December to April. The site is one of the best in the world for this animal. Its crescent-shaped beach, framed by coconut palms and the famous Coconut Tree Hill, is one of the most photographed in Sri Lanka. The villages of Unawatuna (diving, protected lagoon) and Tangalle (wild beaches, turtles) complete this exceptional southern coastline.

For travellers looking for:

  • blue whale watching from Mirissa (Dec–Apr)
  • beach time and snorkeling in Unawatuna Bay
  • wild beaches and sea turtles in Tangalle

Must-do experiences:

  • sunrise whale-watching trip from Mirissa
  • ocean view from Coconut Tree Hill at golden hour
  • sea turtle nesting (nights in Rekawa)

Which trip to Sri Lanka is right for you?

A family safari with Udawalawe’s elephants, a couples’ trip on the legendary tea-hills train, or an intense cultural discovery between Buddhist temples and fortresses — Sri Lanka adapts to every desire.

Practical tips for your trip to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of the most important tea-producing nations in the world — it is the world’s 4th largest producer, and so-called “Ceylon” tea (the island’s colonial name) is recognized as one of the best in the world. The growing region in the Central Highlands (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) produces teas with exceptional floral and fruity notes. Visiting a plantation and taking part in a tasting is an unmissable step on any tour of Sri Lanka.

Luxembourg nationals must obtain an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before entering the country. This electronic authorization is obtained online at eta.gov.lk (USD 30) and allows a 30-day stay, not extendable on site. Passport valid for at least 6 months upon entry. The ETA is generally issued within 24 hours. No stamped visa is required — the ETA QR code is sufficient upon arrival.

The official currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). USD are widely accepted in hotels and tourist sites. Bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) work in mid-range to higher-end hotels and in major cities. Bring cash in rupees for local markets, tuk-tuks, small restaurants and villages. ATMs are available in all major cities.

Several transport options in Sri Lanka depending on budget and desired comfort:

  • Train: extensive and authentic rail network, a must for the Kandy–Ella journey (book 1st class seats in advance)
  • Tuk-tuk: for short urban distances, fare to be negotiated
  • Car + private driver: the most comfortable and flexible option for tours — your driver becomes a valuable guide
  • Bus: dense network but uncomfortable on winding hill roads

A minimum of 10 days is recommended to discover Sri Lanka without feeling rushed. A 12 to 14-day tour lets you combine the cultural triangle (Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy), tea hills (Ella, Nine Arches Bridge), a safari (Yala or Udawalawe) and the southern beaches (Mirissa, Unawatuna). For a 2 to 3-week trip, add the East Coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) or an extension to the Maldives.

No vaccines are mandatory for Sri Lanka when traveling from Luxembourg. Recommended: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and yellow fever if you have transited through an endemic country. An antimalarial treatment may be prescribed for certain rural areas (check with your doctor before departure). Tap water is not drinkable — drink bottled water. Travel and medical repatriation insurance is essential.

FAQ: everything you need to know before traveling to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists. The country went through a long period of civil unrest that ended in 2009, and since then the security situation has been stable in tourist areas. As everywhere, it’s important to stay vigilant in very busy places. Check the travel advice from the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you leave. The 2022 economic crisis is now largely behind the country, and it is once again welcoming a growing number of tourists.

A classic 10-day tour starts in Colombo (1 day), heads up to Sigiriya and the Dambulla caves (2 days), visits Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth (1–2 days), takes the train to Ella and the tea hills (2 days), goes on a safari in Yala (1 day) and ends on the beaches of Mirissa (2 days). This itinerary covers the country’s highlights without rushing and can be adapted to your priorities.

Yes. Mirissa, on the South Coast, is one of the best places in the world for spotting blue whales and sperm whales. The best season runs from December to April, with boat trips leaving at dawn from Mirissa harbor. Dolphins can be seen almost daily. Excursions last 4 to 6 hours. The chance of seeing a blue whale is high (70–80%) in peak season—an unforgettable experience.

Sri Lanka is an affordable destination at very reasonable prices compared to its tourist appeal. In the mid-range, allow around EUR 80–150/person/day (boutique-hotel accommodation, meals in decent restaurants, private-car transport, site entrance fees). Flights from Luxembourg cost between EUR 600 and 1,100 (stopover in Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi). A complete 12-day tour (flights + hotels + car + driver + sites) comes to EUR 2,000–3,500/person in the mid-range.

Yes, absolutely. Seats in 1st class air-conditioned (the most comfortable, with panoramic windows) on the Kandy–Ella train are in very high demand and can be booked on the official Sri Lanka Railways website as soon as reservations open, sometimes several weeks in advance. 2nd class seats can be bought on the day, but the train is often overcrowded. Our team can include the booking in your tour.

Yes, under certain conditions. Sri Lanka is well suited to families with children over 5–6 years old. Safaris in Udawalawe (elephants are easy to spot and very present) are ideal for kids. The tea hills and the southern beaches are calm and safe. However, winding roads can cause nausea in younger children. The heat (30–33°C) should be taken into account with toddlers. Plan a slower pace, with fewer transfers per day.

Yes, and it’s even one of our most popular options. Colombo (CMB) and Malé (MLE) are just a 30-minute flight away, with several daily connections (SriLankan Airlines, flydubai). A 10-day Sri Lanka + 7-night Maldives combo (3 weeks in total) is the ideal itinerary to blend rich culture, safari and total relaxation on the lagoons of the Indian Ocean. Our Flammang advisors design these turnkey combos from Luxembourg.
