Thailand, the “Land of Smiles”, is one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia: a country where age-old Buddhist temples sit alongside dream beaches, where Bangkok street food rivals Phuket’s fine-dining restaurants, and where every smile from the locals makes you feel welcome.

From the fascinating bustle of Bangkok to the lush mountains of Chiang Mai, from the karst cliffs of Krabi to the turquoise waters of Koh Tao, via floating markets, elephant sanctuaries and the colourful Songkran festivals: Thailand is a country of striking contrasts and endless cultural richness.

The best time to visit Thailand is the cool and dry season (November to February): clear skies, mild temperatures (25–30°C) and calm seas on the Andaman coast. For the beaches of the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Tao), choose March to June. Thai cuisine, ranked among the best in the world, is reason enough to travel on its own.

Voyages Flammang offers you a tailor-made trip to Thailand: a classic Bangkok–Chiang Mai–Phuket tour, a beach stay in a resort, a cultural immersion or an adventure in the North — each programme is designed from Luxembourg to suit your wishes and your pace.

Bangkok, a bustling capital between golden temples and modernity

Bangkok is one of the most fascinating cities in Southeast Asia: the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), Wat Pho (46 m Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun on the banks of the Chao Phraya. Floating markets, the lively alleys of Yaowarat (Chinatown) and the nightlife of Khao San Road complete this striking picture.

Chiang Mai, the “Rose of the North” and elephants

Chiang Mai, in the heart of the northern mountains, is a gentle, cultural and authentic city, the opposite of Bangkok’s hustle and bustle. Its 300 Buddhist temples, night market, Thai cooking classes and ethical elephant sanctuaries (Elephant Nature Park) make it a must-stop for any traveller wishing to discover the real Thailand.

Phuket and Krabi — beaches, karst cliffs and the Andaman Sea

In the south-west, the Andaman Sea offers spectacular scenery: the limestone cliffs of Railay Beach in Krabi, Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands, and the beaches of Phuket (Patong, Kata, Karon). Diving and snorkelling in the Andaman’s crystal-clear waters are among the best underwater experiences in Southeast Asia.

Koh Samui and the Gulf of Thailand

Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan are the jewels of the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Samui is ideal for a beach holiday with its coconut-lined beaches and luxury hotels. Koh Tao is world-famous for diving and marine life. Koh Phangan is renowned for its monthly Full Moon Party, but also offers many quiet beaches for those seeking serenity.

Thai cuisine — street food and Asian flavours

Thai cuisine is one of the most famous in the world: Pad Thai (stir-fried noodles with shrimp), Tom Yum Goong (spicy lemongrass soup), Massaman Curry, Som Tum (green papaya salad), mango sticky rice. Bangkok street food (Yaowarat, Talat Rot Fai) is a unique and affordable culinary experience, listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Thailand accessible from Luxembourg

Thailand is accessible from Luxembourg via Paris CDG, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels or Dubai. Flights to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Phuket (HKT) with Thai Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air France or Lufthansa. Duration: around 10 to 12 hours from Paris or Frankfurt. When to go to Thailand?

Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate with three distinct seasons. Choosing the right time also depends on the regions visited: the Andaman (west) and the Gulf of Thailand (east) do not have the same seasons.

Cool and dry season (November – February)
High season: The best time to visit Thailand. Pleasant temperatures (25–30°C), blue skies, calm seas on the Andaman coast. Perfect for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi. Book early — hotels and flights fill up quickly.

Hot season (March – May)
High temperatures (33–36°C), especially in April. Songkran Festival (Thai New Year, 13–15 April): a giant water fight and national celebration across the country — an unforgettable experience! Koh Samui is ideal at this time.

Rainy season (June – October)
Heavy but often short showers. Lush nature, fewer tourists, lower prices. Avoid Phuket and Krabi during this period (the Andaman coast is very rough). On the other hand, Koh Samui and the east coast remain beautiful from March to September.

Practical tips for your trip to Thailand

Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized by a European power. Its name means “Land of the Free Men.” Thais deeply venerate their king and the royal family — it is rude and even illegal to show disrespect to the monarchy. Theravada Buddhism is the state religion, practiced by 95% of the population.

Since 2024, Luxembourg nationals have benefited from a visa exemption extended to 60 days (previously 30 days). All you need is a passport valid for another 6 months on the date of entry. A return or onward ticket is generally required. For a longer stay, a 60-day tourist visa (TR), renewable once, is available from the embassy.

The currency is the Thai Baht (THB). ATMs are everywhere and accept Visa/Mastercard. Withdraw cash at the airport or at 7-Eleven ATMs — the rates are decent there. Local bank withdrawal fees can reach 200–250 THB per transaction. A Revolut or Wise card helps avoid exchange fees.

Bangkok has the BTS Skytrain and the MRT (subway), fast and very convenient. For long distances, domestic flights (Bangkok–Chiang Mai, Bangkok–Phuket) are very affordable (from €20–30). Tuk-tuks, songthaews and Grab taxis (the equivalent of Uber) are a must in cities. For the islands: regular ferries from Surat Thani or Chumphon.

Thai is the official language. English is spoken in hotels, tourist restaurants and airports, but is not widely used outside tourist areas. Download Google Translate with camera mode to decipher signs. A local data SIM (True Move, AIS) is available from the airport for €5–10 — unlimited internet for the entire duration of your stay.

Type A, B and C outlets (220V/50Hz). Thai outlets are often universal and accept European round plugs. A universal adapter is nevertheless recommended as a precaution. The voltage is the same as in Europe (220V), so there’s no need for a transformer for your devices.

Thailand is generally safe for tourists, but a few precautions are necessary: beware of tuk-tuk scams (unwanted tourist circuits), and don’t let yourself be led into gem shops. In temples, cover your shoulders and knees. Avoid drinking alcohol in the street or taking part in political demonstrations.

Thailand is a very affordable destination. A meal in a local restaurant: €2–5. A Thai massage: €8–15 per hour. Accommodation: from €15 (guesthouse) to €400+ (5-star resort). A comfortable stay costs €60–100/day all inclusive (excluding flights). Backpacker budget: €30–40/day. Islands like Koh Samui and Phuket are more expensive.

Consult your doctor before departure. Recommended vaccines include: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, tetanus-diphtheria-polio. In the north (rural areas), malaria prophylaxis may be advised — discuss it with your doctor. Do not drink tap water — bottled water is available everywhere and very cheap. Travel insurance with repatriation is strongly recommended.

No, Luxembourg citizens do not need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 60 days. You only need a passport valid for 6 months. This exemption was extended from 30 to 60 days in 2024. For a longer stay, a tourist visa (TR60) is available from the Thai embassy.
