Mayan and Aztec ruins with worldwide renown

Mexico is home to some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. Chichén Itzá, a modern wonder of the world, Teotihuacán and its Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, Palenque nestled in the Chiapas jungle, and Tulum overlooking the Caribbean: each site tells the story of an age-old civilization of incomparable richness.

Paradise beaches from the Caribbean to the Pacific

From the Riviera Maya with its turquoise waters and seaside resorts of Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, to the wild coasts of the Pacific in Puerto Vallarta and Huatulco, Mexico offers exceptional coastal diversity. The island of Holbox and the seven-color lagoon of Bacalar complete this paradise picture.

A gastronomy listed as UNESCO heritage

Mexican cuisine is one of the few gastronomies listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Tacos, mole, tamales, guacamole, enchiladas… each region has its specialties. On Friday nights in the markets of Oaxaca or Mexico City, street food is an unforgettable culinary experience.

Cenotes and exceptional nature in Yucatán

Yucatán is home to thousands of cenotes — these natural freshwater sinkholes sacred to the Mayas — some of which allow you to dive into breathtaking crystal-clear waters. The Bacalar Lagoon, the Copper Canyon in the north and the jungles of Chiapas round out a natural offering of exceptional diversity.

Colonial cities and a living culture

Mexico City, a sprawling, buzzing capital with world-class museums and its Coyoacán district (Frida Kahlo’s house), colorful Oaxaca, Guanajuato, a UNESCO-listed city with its underground alleyways, San Miguel de Allende beloved by artists… urban Mexico is an immersion in history and creativity.

When to go to Mexico?

Mexico can be visited year-round thanks to its great climatic diversity, but the best time depends on the region and your activities: beaches in the dry season, colonial cities all year long, jungle in the green season.

December to April – Dry season, ideal for the coasts
The high season coincides with the dry season on the Caribbean and Pacific coasts. Sunshine is constant, the waters are calm and crystal-clear—perfect for swimming, diving, and discovering cenotes. It’s the ideal time for the Riviera Maya, Oaxaca, and Mexico City.

May to November – Rainy season, lush nature
The rainy season brings short, intense downpours, especially late in the day. Vegetation is lush, prices are more attractive, and sites are less crowded. Watch out for hurricane risks on the Caribbean coast from June to November. The highlands (Mexico City, Oaxaca) remain pleasant.

Our recommendation
For beaches and archaeological sites, opt for December to April. For a cultural trip to Mexico City or Oaxaca, any time of year works. For great value on the coasts, May or November still offer excellent conditions.

Which trip to Mexico is right for you?

Mexico lends itself to many travel styles: a cultural tour in Yucatán, a beach stay on the Riviera Maya, a gastronomic immersion in Oaxaca, or a grand tour combining colonial cities and beaches. Depending on your preferences and pace, each option offers a unique and unforgettable experience.

Practical tips for your trip to Mexico

Mexico has 35 UNESCO World Heritage sites, one of the highest numbers in the world. In addition, Mexico City is sinking by about 50 centimeters per year because it is built on the former Lake Texcoco, drained by the Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century to build the colonial capital there.

The official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). Bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted in hotels and restaurants in tourist areas. It is recommended to have cash for markets, transport, and remote areas. US dollars are sometimes accepted in very touristy areas, but at an unfavorable rate.

The official language is Spanish. Many Indigenous languages (Nahuatl, Maya, Zapotec…) have the status of national languages. In tourist areas, English is often understood. A few words in Spanish are always greatly appreciated by locals.

In Mexico, the outlets are type A and B. The voltage is 127V at 60Hz. European travelers will need an adapter for type C/E/F plugs, and potentially a voltage converter for devices that are not compatible with 127V.

Tourist areas (Cancún, Riviera Maya, Oaxaca, Mexico City centro) are generally safe. It is recommended to avoid isolated travel at night, not to display valuables, and to find out about areas to avoid before leaving. Local guides and organized tours offer the best safety.

Mexico is accessible from Luxembourg via connections from Paris CDG, Madrid, or Amsterdam to Mexico City (MEX) or Cancún (CUN).

  • Flight duration: about 12 to 14 hours with a stopover
  • No visa required for Luxembourg citizens (tourist stay up to 180 days)

Mexico has many transport options:

  • ADO buses: a comfortable and affordable long-distance network connecting major cities
  • Domestic flights: recommended for long distances (Aeromexico, Volaris, VivaAerobus)
  • Car rental: ideal for exploring Yucatán or Oaxaca at your own pace

FAQ: the most useful questions for planning your trip to Mexico

Define your priorities: beach (Riviera Maya), culture (Mexico City, Oaxaca) or an archaeological circuit (Yucatán, Chiapas). Book your flights and accommodation in advance during high season (December–April). Allow at least 10 to 14 days to combine several regions without rushing. Check your government’s travel advice before you leave.

A week is enough for Yucatán (Cancún, Chichén Itzá, Tulum, cenotes). Two weeks lets you add Oaxaca or Mexico City. Three weeks or more offers a grand tour combining several regions. Mexico is so vast that it takes several trips to see it all.

The best time for the coasts is the dry season, from December to April, with sunshine, calm waters and little rain. For Mexico City and high-altitude towns, travelling is possible year-round. May and November offer a good compromise with attractive prices. Avoid the Caribbean coast from July to October (hurricane risk).

Mexico offers a wide range of prices. Expect between €2,500 and €5,000 per person for a one-week all-inclusive trip from Luxembourg depending on the type of stay: an all-inclusive resort in Cancún, a cultural tour, or a beach-and-culture combination. Cities like Oaxaca or Mexico City are more affordable than the Riviera Maya.

No, Luxembourgish and European citizens do not need a visa to visit Mexico for tourism. A valid passport and a return ticket are sufficient. The authorised length of stay is generally 180 days. A tourist card (FMM) is issued on arrival.

Mexico offers an exceptional variety of activities: visiting Chichén Itzá and Teotihuacán, diving in Cozumel, swimming in cenotes, street food in Oaxaca, museums in Mexico City, surfing in Puerto Escondido, whale watching in Baja California, and hiking in Copper Canyon.

Around 12 to 14 hours with a stopover from Luxembourg, usually via Paris CDG, Madrid or Amsterdam. Air France, Iberia and KLM offer regular connections to Mexico City (MEX) and Cancún (CUN). Direct flights from Paris or Madrid take around 11 hours to Mexico City.

Yes, Mexico is an excellent family destination. The all-inclusive resorts in Cancún and the Riviera Maya offer kids’ clubs and pools, cenotes fascinate younger children, and the pyramids of Teotihuacán are an unforgettable experience for the whole family. Mexican cuisine generally appeals to children.

Yes, Mexico can easily be combined with Costa Rica (direct Mexico–San José flights), Cuba (via Cancún) or the United States. A Mexico–Costa Rica combination is very popular for alternating Mayan culture, Caribbean beaches and the tropical nature of Central America. Our advisors can design a tailor-made multi-destination itinerary.

Tourist areas (Riviera Maya, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, central Mexico City) are generally safe and well frequented by international travelers. It is recommended to follow official travel advice, avoid certain border regions, not travel alone at night, and favor official transportation and organized tours.
