Feel like discovering Iceland, a volcanic island with otherworldly landscapes of fire, ice and celestial lights?

Iceland fascinates with its spectacular diversity: geysers erupting every few minutes, monumental waterfalls plunging into moss, millennia-old glaciers with blue tongues, black-sand beaches under Atlantic spray — and, when night falls, the hypnotic dance of the Northern Lights.

In summer, the midnight sun turns every day into a never-ending adventure: glacier hikes, kayaking in the fjords at midnight, soaking in geothermal springs under an orange sky. In winter, the island dons its snowy coat and offers travelers one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the world: the Northern Lights.

Voyages Flammang helps you create a tailor-made trip to Iceland — a self-drive road trip on the Ring Road, a winter getaway for the Northern Lights, a summer-winter combination, with family, as a couple or with friends — fully tailored to your wishes and your pace.

Northern Lights – the magical spectacle of the Far North

Iceland is one of the best destinations in the world to admire the Northern Lights. From September to March, the night sky is dressed in green, purple and pink curtains above volcanic landscapes and fjords. A natural spectacle that leaves you speechless, visible from rural areas far from the lights of Reykjavik.

The Golden Circle – geysers, waterfalls and tectonic rifts

The Golden Circle (Golden Circle) is Iceland’s must-do route, just a few hours from Reykjavik. It brings together the Strokkur geyser, which erupts every 6 to 10 minutes, the monumental Gullfoss waterfall and Þingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and North American plates drift apart.

Iceland’s waterfalls – Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss

Iceland’s South Coast is home to the country’s most spectacular waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss (60 m) lets you walk behind the curtain of water for a unique view. Skógafoss, 25 metres wide, glows under rainbows during the day. Further east, Dettifoss is Europe’s most powerful waterfall.

The midnight sun – Iceland in summer

From June to early August, the sun almost never sets below the horizon. This unique phenomenon, the midnight sun, bathes the landscapes in golden light at all hours. Night hikes on glaciers, kayaking in the fjords at midnight, or simply strolling under this unreal sky: Icelandic summer is an experience in its own right.

Wildlife – whales, puffins & Icelandic horses

Iceland is a sanctuary for wildlife. Whale-watching trips from Reykjavik or Húsavík make it possible to spot fin whales, sei whales and dolphins. The Látrabjarg cliffs are home to millions of Atlantic puffins. The iconic Icelandic horses, a pure breed since the Viking era, roam the island’s lush green meadows.

Glaciers & volcanoes – the power of Icelandic nature

Iceland was born of fire and ice: its glaciers cover 11% of the country’s surface area. Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe, offers ice hikes and blue ice-cave excursions. Active volcanoes are a reminder that this island is still forming beneath your feet, shaping landscapes of lunar, primal beauty.

When to go to Iceland?

Iceland can be visited year-round, but each season offers a radically different experience. Two main periods stand out: summer for the midnight sun and lush nature, winter for the Northern Lights and snow-covered landscapes.

Summer (June–August) – The midnight sun
The ideal season for hiking, glaciers and waterfalls. All roads are open, and wildlife (puffins, whales) is out in force. Bright nights make it possible to travel and photograph at any hour. Mildest climate, with highs around 17–18°C in July.

Winter (November–March) – The Northern Lights
Peak Northern Lights season. Days are very short (3–4 hours of daylight in December), but the atmosphere is magical. February and March are often the most favorable months for auroras, with longer nights and high solar activity. Plan for warm clothing and a 4×4.

Reykjavik – the colorful capital of the Far North

Reykjavik, the world’s northernmost capital, surprises with its human scale, its colorful-roofed houses, its inventive food scene and its cultural dynamism. Must-sees: Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral, the National Museum, the Laugavegur district, and an evening in its lively bars.

  • Hallgrímskirkja & panorama from the tower
  • National Museum of Iceland
  • Evening out & Nordic gastronomy

The Golden Circle – an Icelandic must

The Golden Circle brings together Iceland’s three most visited sites just a few hours from Reykjavik: the Strokkur geyser, which erupts 20–30 m every 6 minutes; the Gullfoss waterfall with its two dizzying tiers; and Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO site.

  • Strokkur geyser – eruption every 6 min
  • Gullfoss – the golden waterfall
  • Þingvellir – between two tectonic plates (UNESCO)

South Coast – waterfalls & black-sand beach

The South Coast brings together the most iconic landscapes: Seljalandsfoss (walk behind the falls!), Skógafoss and its rainbows, the black-sand beach of Reynisfjara, and the glacial lagoon of Jökulsárlón, dotted with bluish icebergs.

  • Reynisfjara black-sand beach
  • Jökulsárlón – iceberg lagoon

Vatnajökull & the glaciers

Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier (8,100 km²), offers unforgettable experiences: a crampon hike on the ice, exploration of blue ice caves (in winter), a flight over the glacier by plane or helicopter. The glacier tongues of Skaftafell and Svínafellsjökull are easily accessible.

  • Guided glacier hike
  • Blue ice caves (Nov–Mar)
  • Skaftafell – trails and waterfalls

Snæfellsnes Peninsula – mini Iceland

Nicknamed “mini Iceland,” the Snæfellsnes Peninsula packs into 90 km everything that makes the island so magical: the glacier volcano Snæfellsjökull (made famous by Jules Verne), black lava beaches, bird cliffs, and colorful fishing villages.

  • Snæfellsjökull – Jules Verne’s volcano glacier
  • Fishing villages & fjords
  • Bird cliffs (puffins, gannets)

Westfjords – wild & unspoilt

The Vestfjörður (Westfjords) are Iceland’s wildest and least visited region: sheer cliffs plunging into deep fjords, Iceland’s largest puffin colonies at Látrabjarg, and the magnificent Dynjandi waterfall.

  • Látrabjarg – puffin cliffs
  • Dynjandi – the fan-shaped waterfall
  • Hiking & wild off-the-beaten-track fjords

Practical tips for your trip to Iceland

Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Luxembourgish and Belgian nationals can travel there without a visa with a valid ID card or passport. No additional formalities are required for tourist stays.

The Icelandic currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK). Good news: Iceland is one of the most cashless countries in the world — bank cards are accepted absolutely everywhere, even in the smallest villages and mountain huts. There’s no need to bring cash.

The Route 1 (Ring Road), 1,332 km long, loops all the way around the island and is the backbone of the trip. A rental car is essential. For the interior tracks (F-roads), a 4×4 is mandatory — these roads are only accessible in summer (June–September). Public buses are limited to the main routes.

The watchword: layering. Whatever the season, pack a waterproof, windproof jacket, merino wool layers, a hat and gloves. In summer, temperatures rarely exceed 18°C. The weather can change several times an hour — in Iceland they say you get four seasons in one day.

Yes — Icelandic tap water is one of the best and purest in the world, coming from glaciers. Bring a reusable bottle and fill it up at any tap. No need to buy bottled water.

The Northern Lights are visible from September to March, on clear, moonless nights, far from Reykjavik’s light pollution. Aurora activity forecasts are available on the Icelandic Meteorological Office website (vedur.is). Evenings in a rural lodge or a cabin on the edge of a fjord maximize your chances.

Iceland is a volcanic, geologically active island. Follow marked areas and weather warnings meticulously (strong winds, sandstorms, flash floods). Never go near cliff edges or swollen rivers. Check the SafeTravel app before every excursion into remote areas.

There are two main seasons: summer (June–August) for the midnight sun, hiking, waterfalls at full flow and wildlife; winter (November–March) for the Northern Lights and snowy landscapes. July and August are the busiest and most expensive months. June and September offer an excellent compromise: fewer crowds and favorable conditions.

FAQ: everything you need to know to plan your trip to Iceland

Choose your season (summer for the midnight sun, winter for the auroras), book your car well in advance (limited availability in high season), and plan your accommodations outside Reykjavik. Voyages Flammang builds your tailor-made itinerary, step by step.

A minimum of 8 to 10 days is recommended to cover the essentials: Reykjavik, the Golden Circle and the South Coast. 14 days allows you to drive all the way around the island (Ring Road). Three weeks gives you time to explore the Westfjords and the Highlands.

June to August: midnight sun, all roads open, wildlife sightings, optimal hiking. September–October and February–March: best windows for the Northern Lights, fewer tourists. December–January: magical winter atmosphere but very short days.

Iceland is an expensive destination. Allow €2,500 to €4,500 per person for 10 days, all-inclusive (flights, car, accommodation, activities). Campsites and hostel accommodation help reduce the bill. Restaurants in Iceland are particularly pricey — supermarkets (Bónus, Krónan) are a budget-friendly alternative.

Flights from Luxembourg with a connection (usually Brussels or Amsterdam) to Reykjavik-Keflavik (KEF). Direct flights are sometimes available from Brussels in high season. Direct flight time: about 3h15. Icelandair, easyJet and Wizz Air serve Keflavik regularly.

Yes, Iceland is an excellent family destination for children from 6–8 years old. Geysers, waterfalls, Icelandic horses and whales delight young and old alike. Summer is the ideal season for families. Watch out for changeable weather conditions and long driving distances.

The Route 1 or Ring Road is a 1,332 km circular road that makes a complete loop around Iceland. It is paved and can be driven with a standard car (excluding the inland F-roads). Driving it all the way around takes about at least 7 to 10 days if you stop to visit sights. It is the backbone of any Iceland road trip.

Yes, thanks to geothermal springs. The famous Blue Lagoon near Keflavik is the country’s most visited attraction (booking is essential). Many hot pots (free natural springs) dot the island. Sea swimming is not very feasible — the water doesn’t exceed 11°C in summer.

A 4×4 is mandatory for the inland tracks (F-roads), which are open only in summer (June–September). For a trip on the Ring Road only, a standard car is enough in summer. In winter, a 4×4 with snow tires is strongly recommended for added safety on icy roads.

Iceland combines easily with the other Nordic countries. An Iceland–Faroe Islands combo is possible via Reykjavik. Some travelers take a long stopover in Reykjavik on a North America–Europe flight thanks to Icelandair flights.

Iceland is the ultimate romantic destination: soaking under the Northern Lights, a midnight-sun sunset on a black-sand beach, a candlelit dinner in a lodge on the edge of a fjord. An extraordinary honeymoon or anniversary trip for couples seeking emotion and wild nature.
