Tanzania, a sanctuary of African wildlife, invites you on a legendary safari combined with a paradise getaway to Zanzibar, the Spice Island.

From the endless plains of the Serengeti where the Great Migration takes place — the greatest wildlife spectacle on the planet — to the Ngorongoro Crater, a true Noah’s Ark home to lions, elephants, rhinos and hippos, via the elephant herds of Tarangire National Park and the eternal snows of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania unfolds a wilderness of rare power.

Just a few hours’ flight away, Zanzibar offers the perfect counterpoint: white-sand beaches fringed by turquoise waters, the old town of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, cuisine with enchanting spices, and warm Swahili hospitality. The Tanzania–Zanzibar safari-and-beach combo is one of Africa’s great adventures.

Voyages Flammang supports you in designing a tailor-made trip to Tanzania: a private safari itinerary with a French-speaking guide, lodges in the heart of nature, a beach extension in Zanzibar and flights between the mainland and the island, all fully customized from Luxembourg.

The Serengeti and the Great Migration

The Serengeti National Park is one of Africa’s largest nature reserves and the stage for the most breathtaking wildlife spectacle in the world: the Great Migration. Each year, more than 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras cross the endless plains of the Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara in an epic cycle of life. Beyond the migration, the Serengeti offers an exceptional density of predators (lions, cheetahs, leopards) and an abundance of wildlife unmatched anywhere on the planet.

The Ngorongoro Crater – Africa’s Noah’s Ark

The Ngorongoro Crater is an intact volcanic caldera of 260 km², a true microcosm of African wildlife. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is home year-round to more than 25,000 large animals: lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos and one of the largest concentrations of black rhinos in East Africa. The spectacle is of rare intensity: in this enclosed space surrounded by 600-meter-high walls, every safari reveals an extraordinary density of wildlife.

Zanzibar – the Spice Island of the Indian Ocean

Just a 40-minute flight from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar is the Spice Island of the Indian Ocean. Stone Town, its UNESCO-listed old town, reveals a labyrinth of spice-scented alleyways, Arab palaces and colorful markets inherited from centuries of Swahili, Arab and Indian trade. But Zanzibar is also about dazzling white-sand beaches lapped by turquoise waters: Nungwi, Kendwa in the north, Paje and Jambiani in the east—jewels of tropical beauty.

Mount Kilimanjaro – Roof of Africa

At 5,895 meters above sea level, Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and one of the most accessible dormant volcanoes on the planet. Even without reaching the summit, its slopes offer spectacularly varied scenery: tropical forests, high-altitude moorlands, alpine deserts and summit glaciers. The ascent via the Machame or Lemosho route is an unforgettable trek within reach of any well-prepared hiker, with a certified guide.

Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Highlands

The Tarangire National Park is famous for its immense herds of elephants—one of the largest in Africa—and its majestic baobabs that dominate the savannah. Lake Manyara, at the foot of the Great Rift, is a paradise for flamingos and tree-climbing lions, a unique specialty in the world. These two parks, often combined in the northern Tanzanian circuit, are the perfect complement to a safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Tanzania – Zanzibar from Luxembourg

From Luxembourg, Tanzania is accessible via connections through Amsterdam (KLM), Paris-CDG (Air France/KLM), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Dubaï (Emirates) or Doha (Qatar Airways). Total duration: 12 to 16 hours depending on the stopover. Dar es Salaam International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) are the main gateways. A visa is required for Luxembourg nationals—it is obtained online (e-visa) before departure.

When to go to Tanzania – Zanzibar?

The best time for a safari in Tanzania is the dry season, from June to October. Short grass makes wildlife viewing easier, animals gather around waterholes, and the Great Migration reaches its peak with the spectacular crossing of the Mara River between July and September.

For Zanzibar, the best periods are January–February (hot dry season, calm waters, ideal for the beach and diving) and July–September (cool dry season, excellent conditions for the beach and snorkeling). The long rains from March to May should be avoided.

The ideal combo to experience it all: a safari in July–August (Great Migration + good season in Zanzibar). Second option: January–March for a green-season safari with wildebeest calving, plus an extension to Zanzibar during the hot dry season.

Where to go in Tanzania – Zanzibar? Must-see destinations

The Serengeti National Park is the ultimate safari destination. Its 14,763 km² of savannahs, grasslands and gallery forests are home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros) in exceptional numbers. The world-famous Great Migration — 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras in perpetual motion — is Africa’s most breathtaking natural spectacle. The Mara River crossing, between July and September, is an unforgettable, dramatic highlight.

Ideal for:

  • photo safari and Big Five viewing
  • Great Migration (July–September: Mara River)
  • stays in tented camps in the heart of the reserve

Not to be missed:

  • Mara River crossing (Jul–Sep)
  • Olduvai Gorge (cradle of humankind)
  • Ngorongoro as a direct add-on

The Ngorongoro Caldera (260 km²) is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its natural and cultural value. This intact volcanic crater forms a closed ecosystem with extraordinary wildlife richness: more than 25,000 animals live there year-round, including one of the highest concentrations of lions in Africa and black rhinos. The crater highlands (2,300 m altitude) offer safaris with rare wildlife density, often compared to a giant open-air aquarium.

Perfect for:

  • high-density wildlife viewing in the crater
  • black rhinos (endangered species)
  • spectacular scenery encircled by 600 m walls

Good to know:

  • a natural combination with Serengeti and Tarangire
  • Descent into the crater: local 4×4 vehicles only
  • Altitude: plan on bringing a warm layer in the morning

Zanzibar is the spice island par excellence. Stone Town, its UNESCO-listed capital, is a labyrinth of shaded alleys scented with cloves, cinnamon, and cardamom, with its Arab palaces and carved doors, colorful bazaars, and historic docks. But Zanzibar is also home to beaches of absolute tropical beauty: Nungwi and Kendwa in the north (calm waters, an epic sunset), Paje and Jambiani in the east (kitesurfing, shallow turquoise waters, laid-back vibe).

Best for:

  • a beach extension after a mainland safari
  • diving and snorkeling on coral reefs
  • cultural discovery of Stone Town (UNESCO)

Note:

  • 40 min flight from Dar es Salaam
  • Nungwi: ideal for sunset
  • Paje: a major global kitesurfing hotspot

Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) is Africa’s highest peak and one of the world’s most accessible dormant volcanoes. The ascent via the Machame Route (7 days) or Lemosho (8 days) is a spectacular high-altitude trek across five ecological zones: rainforest, giant heath, alpine desert, tundra, and the summit glacier. Even without aiming for the summit, the town of Moshi and the mountain lodges offer an enchanting setting at the foot of the giant.

Recommended for:

  • climbing Kilimanjaro (best months: Jan–Feb and Jul–Oct)
  • high-altitude trekking in the montane forest
  • combining safari + mountains

Key info:

  • Certified guide mandatory
  • Success rate: 85% with a 7–8-day ascent
  • Altitude: plan your acclimatization

The Tarangire National Park is elephant paradise: the largest herds in East Africa gather around the Tarangire River during the dry season, in a landscape of ancient baobabs and ochre savannahs. Lake Manyara, at the foot of the Great Rift, amazes with its diversity: flamingos, pelicans, hippos, and the famous tree-climbing lions—a very rare behavior worldwide. These two parks are the ideal prelude to Tanzania’s northern circuit.

Explore for:

  • Tarangire’s elephant herds (dry season)
  • Lake Manyara’s tree-climbing lions
  • landscapes of ancient baobabs

Good to know:

  • Main gateway: Arusha (flights from Nairobi or Dar es Salaam)
  • Tarangire: 1–2 nights recommended
  • Manyara: ½ day as an add-on

Which Tanzania – Zanzibar trip is right for you?

Tanzania and Zanzibar come in many travel styles: private family safari, adventure tour for couples, Kilimanjaro ascent with friends, a beach extension in Zanzibar. Depending on your wishes, your budget, and your group make-up, we create the perfect trip.

Practical tips for your Tanzania – Zanzibar trip

The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest intact and unsubmerged volcanic caldera in the world, covering 260 km² and with rim walls 600 meters high. It is home year-round to more than 25,000 large animals and is one of the only places in the world where you can spot the Big Five in a single morning on safari.

Tanzania’s official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). The US Dollar (USD) is widely accepted for safaris, hotels and national parks. Bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) work in major hotels. In Zanzibar, USD and cards are well accepted in tourist areas. Bring small USD denominations for tips and local markets.

The inhabitants are called Tanzanians (male) and Tanzanians (female). The people of Zanzibar are often called Zanzibaris. Tanzania is made up of more than 120 different ethnic groups, including the Maasai, famous for their red clothing and traditional pastoral lifestyle, whom you will often meet around safari areas.

The two official languages are Swahili (Kiswahili) and English. Swahili is the national lingua franca, spoken throughout the country. English is used in business, higher education and tourism. In safari areas, your French-speaking guide will provide translation. A few useful Swahili words: Jambo (hello), Asante (thank you), Karibu (welcome).

Tanzania uses type G plugs (three flat pins, UK standard). A universal adapter is essential for European devices. Voltage is 230V/50Hz. In bush lodges and tented camps, electricity may be limited (solar or generator) — bring power banks for your cameras.

From Luxembourg, Tanzania can be reached via:

  • KLM via Amsterdam (AMS) → Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR)
  • Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO)
  • Emirates via Dubai (DXB)
  • Qatar Airways via Doha (DOH)
  • Total duration: 12 to 16 hours depending on the stopover. For Zanzibar (ZNZ), a domestic connection from Dar es Salaam is generally required (40 min).

On the mainland:

  • 4×4 with driver-guide: transport included in all our safaris
  • Domestic flights: Dar es Salaam ↔ Kilimanjaro ↔ Arusha (Precision Air, Coastal Aviation)

To reach Zanzibar:

  • Flight: 40 min from Dar es Salaam, several daily departures
  • Fast ferry: 2h from Dar es Salaam, a budget option

On Zanzibar: taxis, tuk-tuks, daladalas (minibuses) or scooter.

Luxembourg nationals must obtain a Tanzanian visa. It is available as an online e-visa before departure (recommended) or on arrival. Cost: around USD 50. Recommended vaccinations:

  • Yellow fever: mandatory if transiting through an endemic country
  • Malaria: prophylactic treatment recommended (safari areas)
  • Hepatitis A, typhoid: strongly advised

Tap water is not safe to drink — drink bottled water only.

FAQ: the most useful questions for planning your Tanzania – Zanzibar trip

The dry season from June to October is best for safaris. Short grass makes wildlife viewing easier, animals gather around waterholes, and the Great Migration reaches its peak with the Mara River crossing (July–September). The green season (November–May) has an advantage: wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti (January–March), with few tourists.

The Great Migration is the largest movement of land mammals on Earth: 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras loop through the Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The highlights are the crossings of the Grumeti River (June) and the Mara River (July–September), where crocodiles and lions lie in wait. Even outside the migration, the Serengeti is one of the world’s richest safari destinations.

Yes, the safari + Zanzibar combo is one of the most popular in East Africa. After a safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro from Arusha, a 40-minute domestic flight takes you to Zanzibar for the ideal beach extension. The recommended length is 7–10 nights safari + 5–7 nights in Zanzibar. It’s the perfect formula to combine wild adventure and tropical relaxation.

The 5 must-see parks in the north:

  • Serengeti: Great Migration, Big Five, endless landscapes
  • Ngorongoro: UNESCO caldera, exceptional wildlife density, black rhinos
  • Tarangire: elephant herds, baobabs
  • Lake Manyara: tree-climbing lions, pink flamingos
  • Mount Kilimanjaro: high-altitude trekking, the Roof of Africa

Yes, Luxembourg citizens must obtain a Tanzanian visa. The online e-visa is highly recommended (apply several weeks before departure at evisa.go.tz). Cost: around USD 50. The visa on arrival is theoretically available but can involve long queues. The visa covers both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Recommended lengths:

  • 10 nights: northern safari circuit (Serengeti + Ngorongoro + Tarangire) + 3–4 nights in Zanzibar
  • 14 nights: full safari circuit + Kilimanjaro (short trek) + Zanzibar
  • 7 nights: essential mini safari circuit + Zanzibar extension

A minimum of 10–12 nights is recommended to fully enjoy Tanzania and Zanzibar.

The best times for Zanzibar are:

  • January–February: hot dry season, calm waters, excellent visibility (diving, snorkelling, beach)
  • July–September: cool, dry season, pleasant sea, good underwater visibility

To avoid: April–May (long rainy season, flights sometimes disrupted). The beaches of Nungwi (north) remain swimmable almost year-round thanks to their orientation.

Yes, Kilimanjaro is accessible to any hiker in good physical condition. No mountaineering techniques are required. The best routes are Machame (7 days, high success rate) and Lemosho (8 days, better acclimatisation). A certified guide is mandatory. Best months: January–March and July–October. Overall success rates range from 65–85% depending on the duration chosen.

Yes, Tanzania naturally pairs with:

  • Kenya (Maasai Mara): follow the Great Migration on the other side, accessible from Nairobi
  • Seychelles: premium beach extension, direct flights from Dar es Salaam
  • Mauritius: another option for luxurious beaches in the Indian Ocean
  • Uganda/Rwanda: mountain gorilla trekking, a unique experience

Tanzania is a mid- to high-end destination for safaris:

  • Budget safari: €200–350 /person/night (standard lodges, luxury camping)
  • Luxury safari: €500–1,500 /person/night (exclusive tented camps, signature lodges)
  • Zanzibar: €100–400 /night depending on the hotel’s standard
  • Flights from Luxembourg: €900–1,400 return depending on the season

A complete 14-night trip (safari + Zanzibar) ranges from €5,000 to €10,000 per person.
