Fancy finding yourself at the top of the Empire State Building, facing a Manhattan skyline that looks like it came straight out of a movie; standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, confronted with a 1,800-metre-deep abyss; or driving a convertible along Highway 1 at sunset, with the Pacific Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see?

The United States is a destination in its own right — a continent disguised as a country, with 50 states, 6 time zones, 63 national parks, and a diversity of landscapes and experiences that few destinations in the world can match. New York, the most iconic city on the planet, concentrates unique energy across its five boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens, the Bronx. The American West offers natural landscapes on a scale that defies imagination: the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and its red hoodoos, Zion National Park, the Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, and Yellowstone form one of the greatest concentrations of natural wonders in the world.

In California, San Francisco and its Golden Gate, Highway 1 between Big Sur and Monterey, Los Angeles and Hollywood create an unmatched range of experiences. In Las Vegas, in the Nevada desert, an entire city was built on excess and spectacle. In Florida, Miami and its Art Deco beaches, the Everglades and their alligators, the Florida Keys, and Orlando complete this XXL picture.

Voyages Flammang supports you in designing a fully bespoke tailor-made trip to the United States, entirely personalized from Luxembourg.

New York City – The most iconic city in the world

New York captivates with its neighbourhoods with radically different personalities: Midtown and its skyscrapers (Empire State Building, Times Square), the Financial District and One World Trade Center, SoHo, Harlem and the Brooklyn Bridge. Central Park (341 ha) and the High Line (a former railway line converted into a landscaped walkway) complete an unforgettable picture.

Western parks – Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Monument Valley

The American West brings together the greatest natural wonders in the world: the Grand Canyon (1,800 m deep, UNESCO), Bryce Canyon and its 35,000 red hoodoos, Zion National Park and its 600 m walls, the Antelope Canyon (Navajo reservation), and the mythical Monument Valley — the setting for every Western.

California – San Francisco, Highway 1 & Los Angeles

San Francisco and its Golden Gate, Highway 1 (1,000 km of spectacular coastline between Big Sur and San Diego), Los Angeles, Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, and the beaches of Venice and Santa Monica: California brings together in a single state everything that makes the American dream.

Las Vegas & Route 66 – The Strip and the desert

Las Vegas, which rose from the Mojave Desert, packs the world’s most spectacular casino hotels along 7 km of the Strip (Bellagio, Caesars Palace, The Venetian). The city is also the ideal base for reaching the Grand Canyon (4h), Zion (2h30) and the Antelope Canyon (4h30). Route 66 crosses Arizona with its retro diners and Western landscapes.

Florida – Miami, Everglades, Keys & Orlando

Miami and its Art Deco district of South Beach, Everglades National Park (alligators, manatees, UNESCO), the Florida Keys all the way to Key West, and the 7 theme parks of Orlando (Walt Disney World, Universal Studios) make Florida the most complete American destination for families.

From Luxembourg – access and formalities

The United States is accessible via a stopover in Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt or Bruxelles to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago or Las Vegas (9 to 12 hours). Luxembourg citizens must obtain an ESTA (esta.cbp.dhs.gov, USD 21, valid for 2 years) before departure — no visa for stays of up to 90 days.

When to go to the United States?

The United States spans 6 time zones and around thirty climate zones. There’s no bad season to visit — there’s the right destination for every season.

Spring (March–May) — the best season for the American West
Ideal temperatures (15–25°C) in the canyons of Arizona and Utah, desert wildflowers in Arizona, moderate crowds. It’s the perfect time for the Grand Canyon–Bryce–Zion road trip.

Summer (June–August) — New York, California & Florida
New York is at its cultural peak (festivals, rooftop bars, open-air Broadway). Note: the American West regularly exceeds 45°C in July–August — avoid the canyons in mid-summer.

Fall (September–November) — golden light & fewer tourists
September–October is ideal for New York (15–25°C, perfect light), the Western parks and California. Bryce Canyon under its first November snow is spectacular.

Winter (December–March) — Florida, Southern California & a Christmas atmosphere in New York
Florida (Miami, Keys, Orlando) is ideal from November to April. Southern California (Los Angeles, San Diego) stays pleasant year-round. New York at Christmas (Rockefeller Center, Central Park under the snow) is an unforgettable experience.

Where to go in the United States? Must-see regions

New York is a complete destination in its own right. In 5 to 7 days, you’ll only scratch the surface of Manhattan — and that’s enough for the city to stay with you for life.

  • romantic getaway
  • starting point for an East Coast tour

Don’t miss:

  • Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise

  • family trip or trip with friends

Not to be missed:

  • sunrise over the Grand Canyon South Rim

Which trip to the United States is right for you?

A road trip through the West’s national parks with a family dazzled by the Grand Canyon, a romantic getaway in New York between Broadway and rooftop bars, or an adventure with friends on Highway 1 in a convertible — the United States suits every travel style.

Practical tips for your trip to the United States

The United States is the only country in the world to have landed men on the Moon — six times between 1969 and 1972. It also has more than 63 protected national parks, the largest highway network in the world (77,000 km of Interstate highways), and the Statue of Liberty was gifted by France in 1886 — built in Paris by Gustave Eiffel before being assembled on New York’s Bedloe Island.

Luxembourg nationals do not need a visa thanks to the Visa Waiver Program. However, an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is required before any flight — to be requested on esta.cbp.dhs.gov for 21 USD, valid for 2 years. Your passport must be electronic (biometric chip). For stays longer than 90 days, a B-1/B-2 visa is required.

The currency is the US dollar (USD). Tips are a cultural obligation: 15 to 20% at restaurants, 1–2 USD per drink at the bar, 15 to 20% in taxis/Uber. Taxes are not included in displayed prices (add 7 to 10% depending on the state). Average budget: €150 to €250/person/day for mid-range travel in New York.

A car is essential for the American West and Florida. A European driving licence is sufficient. Key points: full insurance (CDW + LDW) is strongly recommended because medical care in the USA is prohibitively expensive; many companies accept only credit cards for the deposit; the minimum age is often 21 (with a surcharge) or 25 (without a surcharge).

The USA is generally safe for tourists in tourist areas. Take out travel insurance with medical coverage of at least 500,000 USD — one night in intensive care can cost 50,000 USD without insurance. Gun culture is an American reality — avoid conflict situations and check the travel advice from Luxembourg’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs before departure.

The time difference with Luxembourg is −6 hours for New York (Eastern Time), −7h for Chicago, −8h for Denver, −9h for Los Angeles (Pacific Time). Most travellers adjust in 2–3 days. Tip: stay awake until 10 pm local time on the first evening.

FAQ: everything you need to know before traveling to the United States

For a New York stay, 5 to 7 days are ideal. For an American West road trip (Las Vegas–parks–Monument Valley), allow 12 to 15 days. For a Florida combo (Miami + Keys + Orlando), 10 to 14 days. For a grand East + West Coast tour, plan on at least 3 weeks. Because of the distances, domestic flights (Southwest, American, Delta) are essential for multi-region itineraries.

The best time for the American West is March–May (spring, desert blooms, mild temperatures of 15–25°C) and September–November (autumn light, smaller crowds). Avoid July–August in Arizona and Nevada’s canyons — temperatures regularly exceed 45°C and some trails are closed due to extreme heat.

New York, Chicago and San Francisco have excellent public transport — a car is even a drawback there (parking is outrageously expensive). On the other hand, the American West (national parks, Route 66, Highway 1), Florida and New England are almost impossible to explore without a car.

English is the de facto language in the United States. In Miami, Spanish is almost unofficially co-official. In national parks, rangers often speak several languages, including French. Basic English is enough for 95% of tourist situations — trilingual Luxembourgers do very well everywhere in the USA.

Insurance with medical coverage of at least USD 500,000 is absolutely essential — medical care is among the most expensive in the world. One night in intensive care can cost USD 50,000 to 100,000. Check that your insurance covers medical repatriation, cancellations and baggage.

For 2 weeks, first trip: 3 nights in New York + flight to Las Vegas (1 night) + West road trip (Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion, 7 nights) + Los Angeles (2 nights, Hollywood, beaches, Griffith) + return flight. This itinerary combines the most iconic city in the world with the USA’s most beautiful natural parks.
